About Verona
Originally part of Newark until 1798 and later a part of Caldwell Township (1892), the Borough of Verona was incorporated in 1907 and became the Township of the Borough of Verona in 1981. It is located in the valley between the First and Second Watchung Mountains. The healthful climate led to the location of the Essex County Sanatorium within its boundaries.
Verona remains primarily a residential community but has factories and industrial and commercial areas for business. A notable point of interest has been and is Verona Park, because of its beauty and location.
The Annin Company (1857), "Flagmakers to the World," owned by Edward and Joseph Annin, moved their New York-based business to Verona in 1918. Annin is the oldest and largest flag manufacturer in the United States whose flags were used in Perry's and Byrd's expeditions to the North and South Poles, and the climb to Everest, and were planted on the surface of the moon in 1969 (Apollo 11 and 12).
Verona has four elementary schools, a middle school and high school as well as a free public library.
